How Not To Get Locked Out Of Twitter

Have you ever been in a sudden state of shock from finding yourself locked out of Twitter?

This has been occurring quite a bit lately. Instead of logging in to my profile after I enter my credentials I see the message:

Locked Out of Twitter

Well, I’ve finally figured out why this is happening thanks to Jenni Leeds and Dave Beronja. The problem was occurring because I was running too many Twitter desktop clients at once.

I usually use Tweetdeck and DestroyTwitter as my two main Twitter clients, but lately I’ve been playing with Tweetie and Seesmic again. Having more than two of these applications running and then logging in from the browser is a bad idea. It raises red flags when a user keeps logging in, that makes sense to me.

I’m happy to report that this was simply a case of user error, I have no one to blame but myself.

  • How/why do you use so many Twitter clients at once? I can barely keep up with Tweetdeck on the computer and twitterific on the iPhone.

  • Interesting. Any idea whether Twitter takes IPs into account or they're just going for the simple number of logins in x time? I ask this as I have the idea Tweetie is mostly used in iPhones, so a trigger might have been logins attempts from different machines with different IPs?

  • If you change your password in twitter but forget to also change it for example in tweetdeck, tweetdeck will ping twitter login constantly with the old wrong password. Twitter thinks it’s a bot trying to get access & will block your account.

  • I use Tweetdeck for work @griffintech and DestroyTwitter for my
    personal Twitter client.

I do this partly to avoid tweeting from the incorrect account.

Once somebody creates a Twitter client and app that shares custom
groups and searches they will have my business.

I was testing the latest installs of Seesmic and Tweetie, but haven't
    found the perfect solution yet.

  • Good question. I'm guessing login attempts, though I can't be sure.

Can a DOS attack be launched by multiple logins?
