Not all Meet Ups are created equally. It's best to reach out to members to learn more first.

Thanks for the comment.

Meetup is a horribly bulky website. I don't find it easy to use at all. I've been waiting for them to get rid of the bulk and just be simple. Also, I've gone to a couple of meetups where I find out it's not really a get-together of like minded people- but rather a business trying to sell me some products. Waste of time.

In addition to not being able to delete your own group, you can spend hours creating content for one and if meetup decides to close your group for whatever reason, you lose all your work!! When I created a group recently, Meetup decided it was not in compliance with their terms of service because its intent was to drive members to another business site. Although this was not a correct assumption, they sent me a generic email informing me that the group would be closed if I did not clarify my group's purpose within 48 hours. This occurred over the holiday weekend when Meetup's offices were closed and before I had the opportunity to respond they had closed my group and purged all content. Even after multiple attempts to reach support to try to resolve the misunderstanding or at least get my content restored, meetup did not even give me the courtesy of a return call. So much for community and collaboration.

What are the viable alternative site out there where you can list publicly searchable groups like meetup.com allows?

Thanks Terry.
I had a big issue with Meetup's original registration process. That's
because you would go through the lengths of setting up the group, only
to see it costs money after the fact.

Since they now have pricing up front, I can't fault them at this. I'm
glad it was fixed.

I actually don't mind that they charge for their service. Think of all
of the other free services without business models, Twitter comes to
mind.

I only hope they allow Meetup group owners, the one paying the bill,
more power over his or her group.

D

It's been a problem since 2005 because in 2005 is when meetup first starting charging the montly $19 extortion. It's all about meetup management maintaining a free flow of fees to ensure their do-nothing jobs. I agree with you that a group name is similar to brand name and should be afforded the same protection so that any Tom, Dick, or Johnny-joined-lately scammer/spammer cannot take over a group.
