A Free Ringtone For BBSers

Back in the late 80′s I was pretty hooked to BBSing. Every night I either called bulletin board systems in the 416 area code, or I would switch on my own BBS for people to call through the night.

There was a great segment on The Colbert Report last night. His “flashback” brought back some great memories of the loud, screeching squeal a modem connecting.

So, naturally I created a ringtone! You can download it here for free (right click).

Enjoy it? Please share it.

what kind of file is this? I don't recognized the m4r extension.

It's a ringtone. iTunes recognizes it as that. Import the file to iTunes, it
should appear under Ringtones, then sync your device.

You just brought back some funny memories with the BBS's.

After building my own PC in the mid 80's I'd start connecting to these BBS's every night. If you remember, when you connect, the admin system would automatically call you back to verify your number.

Well, at 1, 2 or 3am, my wife didn't appreciate the phone ringing. After one too many call backs of those BBS's, I heard the loud thumping of her foot steps. Unfortunately, quickly shutting off my PC doesn't stop the incoming phone call from ringing.

As you can figure, I got an earful that night.

Thanks for the memories from about 20 years ago, Dave.

I just discovered that Safari doesn't like the file. Use Firefox to download it instead.

I hear Cam's phone ringing this all the time. Safari downloads the file fine, just if you primary click on it, the built in quicktime player doesn't play it back, but downloading the file to your computer works just fine.

I don't normally do this sort of thing… but this is great. Thanks Dave.

I'm not a big ringtone guy either, but this was too much fun. My phone
actually rang during the Fray Cafe and Pistachio heard it:

It's so funny to hear the sound on other people's phones at work. So, I
    always think it's mine.
Thanks for the comment Bob. It's great to hear from you.
