What was the best viral video of 2008? What was your favorite?

When the holiday season is among us, I tend to take a moment to reflect on the year that was. The first thing that always comes to my mind are viral videos. Earlier today, a friend of mine asked me (not really, but it helps me compose this post) what my favorite viral video of 2008 was.

There were so many videos, many of which happened to become viral. I’m hoping we can lose the whole “viral video” saying in 2009, it’s so 2007 after all. I’ll keep referring to this as a viral video, because it was actually created to go viral – and it did.

Getting back to the topic at hand. I had to sit down and do some serious ruminating about my favorite videos of the year, I didn’t want to disappoint my friend (still no friend here, but you know…). I concluded that the best video of the year had to be this one:

Yes, that was gross, but wait there’s more to the story.

Obviously, the video was a hoax. Here’s what happened next.

And finally the conclusion:

The original video got “leaked” all over the web early in the year. The story even got picked up on CNN and other major news and television networks. Bob Odenkirk is the man behind the plan, you may remember him from the incredible program (a personal favorite), Mr. Show.

Sadly, there was also a “Making of” video, but that has disappeared from our beloved tubes. :-(

Thank you all for taking the time to read this post, watch videos, have a laugh, and pretend I have a friend who’s keen on discovering my favorite viral video of 2008.

Now the “real” question: What was YOUR favorite video of the year?
